Brutalist Liminal area 3

Another personal piece done in a loose collection of "liminal" brutalist interiors, inspired by my memories of a local UK shopping centre and bus station :D and some of the style of Simon Stålenhag.
I know Stålenhag uses some 3D, but he likes to leave it untextured and do that himself as a paint task. I'm from a more 3D background and I love Sustance Painter so my 3D base is fully textured and lit. I've been studying Stålenhag's painting style a lot and I can see a specific canvas type brush he uses. If you have bought any Eytan Zana Gumroads you'll have his brush pack and "sampled Brush 8 9" just under the soft round brush towards the bottom of the pack will give you a similar look. Stålenhag also does quite a bit of cross hatched paint strokes, I think, and again it's something I've tried to replicate here (see close ups)
My 3D to painterly 2D process is fairly streamlined now: I grade and colour correct the raw render to get the look I want. I *do not* apply any glows at this stage though. Then using ID/material pass I cut out each major piece of the scene into a new layer. I'll roughen up the edges with brush strokes then duplicate that as a clipping layer above. I use the paint daubs filter with 0 sharpening to simplify the textures and then on another clipping layer above that I'll manually paint over with the Stålenhag-esque brush, following the form of the surfaces but also shading perpendicular every now and again to get the cross hatch feel. A final clipping layer is used to reinforce dark edges and highlight edges, again with the Stålenhag-esque brush from Eytan. It's then this over and over again for each element in the scene. Finally I'll have a screen or linear dodge layer where I paint glows with a textured brush and then some gradient layers to add lighting effects. Sharpening, soft-light canvas texture (low opacity) and grain and it's done.

The main architectural reference is the magnificent Scaraborough College
My last pieces in this series used Maya as the 3D app but this is the first that's Blender and it's difficult to justify going back to Maya tbh.

I try to stream at least once a week on http://twitch.tv/liminalbloke where I go through making this kind of stuff
